The differences between the medical display and ordinary display

Because the medical display and ordinary display is applied in different field, the requirement of the parameter is also not the same. Now the following information is according to the main parameters.

1. Size: the size of display is expressed by the length of diagonal line

The mainstream size of ordinary display is 15 inches and 17 inches. And the size is almost proportionate to the price, that means the larger size, the higher price.

The medical display often uses 18 inches, 20 inches and 21 inches. The size is always similar to film, but it is not related to price.

2.Resolution: the quantity of actual displayed pixels in unit area, such as 800*600, 1200*1600 and so on

Ordinary display: 1024*768, 1280*1204; it is almost displayed in cross screen, and do not need to switch cross screen and vertical screen;

Medical display: 1024*1280 (vertical screen)/1280*1024 (cross screen), it is called 1 MP and often displayed in cross screen. And it is also widely used in CT, MRI and digital stomach and intestine machine;

1200*1600 (vertical screen)/1600*1200 (cross screen), it is called 2 MP (short for 1 K) and often displayed in vertical screen. And it is also widely used in CR, DSA, digital stomach and intestine machine and PACS reading workstation;

1536*2048(vertical screen)/2048*1536(cross screen), it is called 3 MP (short for 1.5 K) and often displayed in vertical screen. And it is also widely used in CCD-DR and PACS diagnosis workstation;

2048*2560(vertical screen)/2560*2048(cross screen), it is called 5 MP (short for 2 K) and often displayed in vertical screen. And it is also widely used in flat DR, breast machine and PACS diagnosis workstation.

For the medical display, the resolution is proportionate to the price and the resolution of radiation equipment. The corresponding equipment should be provided the display with same resolution.


Ordinary display: 200-300cd/m2 have brightness stabilization requirement

Medical display: 600-700cd/m2, after calibration system, the brightness is 400-500cd/m2; and it needs to stay stable in 30,000 hours even in 100,000 hours.

4.Gray scale: the monochrome display needs support of the graphics cards. And the medical professional display should be equipped with specified graphics cards.

Ordinary display: It is 8 bit-256 mono, used to display color image and no gray scale requirement, it can use ordinary graphics cards.

Medical display: It is 10 bit-1024 mono and used to display X-ray gray scale image. For the diagnosis, it requires more than 10 bit-12 bit (1024-4096 gray scale).

5.Contrast ratio: the ratio of brightest value and darkest value of the display. The color display does not have too much requirements, but medical display require to convey the degree of black and white of the gray scale image.

Ordinary display: 300:1~400:1

Medical display: 600:1~1000:1


Ordinary display: have certifications related to environmental protection and electromagnetism

Medical display: not only have certifications related to environmental protection and electromagnetism, but also have certification in medical industry. Only with them, it can be allowed by laws and enter into medical domain. For example: American FDA 510 (K), MDD.

7.Graphics cards:

Ordinary display: memory, speed, 3D index and frequently used AGP slot.

(1)Medical display: the common PCI slot, display mode, a graphics card with two outlets, the switch of the main display and vice display, the switch of color and black, the 10 bit and 12 bit gray scale output, the switch of cross screen and vertical screen:

Display mode: When diagnosis workstation need two or more displays, the graphics cards should have flexible display mode and be more convenient for doctors to diagnose.

(2)A graphics card with two outlets: When a workstation is equipped with two displays, the graphics should have two outlets.

(3)The switch of the main display and vice display: When there is an ordinary display and one or more medial displays, the ordinary display is the main display that shows colorful image without lacking of other colors and the medical display is the vice display that shows mono image without faults. However, it is not easy for medical displays to be perfect. The medical display often has gray scale faults when the ordinary display is the main display. If the medical display is the main display, the colorful image often lacks other colors. And the words show very small and plain in the high resolution medical display when the program menu is opened. It is not convenient for doctors to operate it. And this has become a common technical problem for the medical graphics cards.

(4)The switch of color and black: When the medical graphics cards (gray scale graphics cards) are equipped with medical display showing color images, the RGB three primary colors signal often only use color G to show gray scale images. The information of R and B two primary colors has lost, when the color image turns into gray scale image.

(5)The 10 bit and 12 bit gray scale output: The ordinary graphics card technology is set up on the stage of WINDOWS technology, so the output signal should be 8 bit and the gray scale should be 256 gray scale. Because the WINDOW system palette has occupied 20 gray scale, the actual display gray scale becomes 236 gray scale and some images will have obvious gray scale faults. This is the reason why the ordinary graphics card can not replace the medical graphics card. The medical professional graphics card takes the problem of 10 bit and 12 bit output into consideration, so the PACS company should develop it again. It is not suitable for the national conditions.

(6)The switch of cross screen and vertical screen:

Ordinary graphics card: have cross screen display, such as: 1024*768, 1280*1024

Medical professional graphics card: have cross/vertical screen, often with cross screen in CT, MRI, DSA and breast, with vertical screen in CR and DR,
